GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984

GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984

GREENWAY ARTS ALLIANCE PRESENTS George Orwell’s 1984

Based on the iconic novel by George Orwell, 1984 brings us the story of Winston Smith, a cog in the giant machine state of Oceania. Physically and mentally under the omnipresent eye of Big Brother, Winston has been caught struggling for scraps of love and freedom in a world awash with distrust and violence. Ferociously and provocatively staged by Kate Jopson, Greenway brings to the stage of one of the most prescient works of literature of the last century.

1984 is a powerful examination of what might have been – and may still be. It is a work of fiction, not prophesy. It is an extrapolation of the history and political philosophies of the twentieth century. This production is a complex multi-media piece merging live performance and music with intricate video and audio design.

Kate Jopson is Artistic Director of The Flagship Ensemble, and Associate Artistic Director of Circle X Theatre Co. Most recent directing credits include: Twelfth Night with Coeurage Theatre Co. and the critically acclaimed, Second Skin with The West/The Flagship Ensemble.

Adapted by Alan Lyddiard this stage version has been described by The Scotsman as “mind blowing” — an appropriate term of praise given that 1984 describes the brainwashing of both an individual and a society. Orwell’s harrowing vision of society controlled through Newspeak, Doublethink and the ever-present, all-seeing eye of Big Brother is given a twenty-first century make-over with a mix of visual theatre, music and projection.

With 1984, Greenway Arts Alliance launches GREENWAY READS a “novel to stage” collaboration with Los Angeles, Fairfax High School and West Hollywood Public Library.

Greenway Court Theatre’s professional production of 1984 launches the premier of GREENWAY READS, a collaboration along with the City of West Hollywood Public Library, Greenway Institute for the Arts, the Melrose Trading Post and the Fairfax High School English Department. Fairfax High School students and residents of West Hollywood are included in an all school and community reading of the novel 1984 culminating with Greenway Court’s theatrical production of Orwell’s 1984.

Greenway’s multi-disciplinary approach to programming will focus on the novel’s themes while bringing it to life on stage and through arts education and special events. Greenway Court Theatre’s stage production of 1984 opens October 21st and runs through November 19th.
